Loncon 3 have recently announced record participation in this year’s Hugo Awards voting, with three and a half thousand ballots now in and awaiting the ceremony next Sunday at 8pm. This is great news for sci-fi fans everywhere, as it shows a definite increased interest in the genre. Here’s hoping the trend continues ever upward!

Loncon itself, the hallmark sci-fi convention worldwide, spans from Thursday 14th to Sunday 18th August and  will feature the 1939 Retro Hugos on Thursday’s opening evening at 8pm.

Take a look at the shortlist for this year’s Hugos. There’s some pretty great entries up there, including Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s The Wheel of Time, Brian K. Vaughan’s graphic novel Saga and the blockbusters Gravity and Pacific Rim.

If you’re sad you can’t make this year’s Loncon, don’t fret – the Hugo Awards will be livestreamed here, so you won’t miss a thing!

In addition, Loncon has announced a special guest from the world of science – cosmonaut Anatolii Artsebarskii, who flew the 1991 Soyuz mission and holds a total of 144 days in space. He will be speaking at 5pm on the Sunday of Loncon, so all space nerds must make sure not to miss this one!

Loncon 3 has a fantastic weekend programme, which you can view in its entirety here. There’s a ton of amazing events on offer, including a performance by the Worldcon Philharmonic Orchestra, a writer’s workshop, and theatre performances throughout the weekend.
