Pacific Rim 2 announced alongside animated series
Get your Jagers ready, and prepare to re-enter the drift, as Guiliermo del Toro announces a follow on to his 2013 franchise.
News that the long rumored sequel to 2013’s summer blockbuster Pacific Rim has been green-lit by Legendary Pictures has been confirmed, with a release set for April 7th 2017. The giant robots vs giant aliens smash-fest was released on July 12th to very high praise from critics and viewers alike, but was not a commercial hit in the domestic box office with only $101.8 million, but was saved by the rest of the worldwide box office sale, grossing $411 million, with $114 of that coming from the Chinese market.
The sequel will be penned by director Guillermo del Toro, Travis Beacham and new collaborator Zak Penn, and will follow original protagonists Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi as Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori respectively, and will continue on from the events of the first film.
Also del Toro announced an animated series, penned by the same creative team as the films, to follow on from the comic series Tales From Year Zero. The comic focused on the very first Kaiju attack in San Francisco, and the creation of the Jaegers and their pilots.
This news has fans of the film in eager anticipation for 2017, and with the series set for release in the interim space between now and the sequel, we shouldn’t have too long to wait until the Jaegers are back on our screens
